Green, Garmin Chevy Starts 37th at Kansas Speedway

KANSAS CITY, KS. (Sept. 28) – Jeff Green drove his No. 66 Garmin Chevrolet to a qualifying time of 31.773 seconds, at an average speed of 169.956 miles per hour, during qualifying for the 400-mile NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race at Kansas Speedway on Friday afternoon.

“It was really loose,” Green said. “It was so loose, I could hardly turn the steering wheel to the left without it spinning out. We slowed down more than some and less than others (from the lap times posted in practice), so we had about the lap we expected. We’ll get it dialed in tomorrow and hopefully be able to put on a good show for our Garmin guests on Sunday.”

Green’s time resulted in the No. 66 team being awarded a provisional starting spot based on owners’ points, and Green will roll off from the 37th starting position for Sunday’s race.

The pole position went to Jimmie Johnson (No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet), who circled the 1.5-mile track in a time of 30.846 seconds, at an average speed of 175.063 miles per hour. The rest of the top-five included; Matt Kenseth (No. 17 DeWalt Ford), Scott Riggs (No. 10 Valvoline Dodge), Jeff Gordon (No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet) and Denny Hamlin (No. 11 FedEx Chevrolet). Ryan Newman (No. 12 Alltel Dodge) also posted an impressive lap, but his qualifying effort was disallowed after his car went through post-qualifying inspection and officials determined the roof height on his entry was too low. Newman will now start from the rear of the field, using a provisional starting position.

Johnson was the best qualifier of the 12 drivers eligible for the Chase for the Championship, with Kenseth, Gordon and Hamlin following. Other Chase competitors will start as follows (after Newman's time was disallowed): Kyle Busch, eighth; Martin Truex Jr., ninth; Clint Bowyer, 10th; Kurt Busch, 12th; Kevin Harvick, 17th; Tony Stewart, 19th; Carl Edwards, 27th; and Jeff Burton, 35th.

The 400-mile race from Kansas Speedway will air live on ABC and MRN Radio affiliates on Sunday, beginning at 1 p.m. ET.
